The Lead In: I didn’t listen to any music today but I did enjoy a delicious Shiner Black. MMMMM. Very nice.
The 411 on the 55: Both signed up on the ship, they run into a scarred and ugly man, Elijah. He annoys them both by cautioning them about the Pequod and Captain Ahab. They ignore him twice and are soon out on the ocean headed to sea. Ahab makes his first appearance in the book after several days of sailing. He’s grizzled and tough, missing his leg, and super salty with his mates. He’s driven.
The rest of today’s reading was discussion of the mates on the ship, including the first mate, Starbuck, and a long and complex description of the different types of whales.
Line of the Day: “Butchers we are, that is true.” pg 142
The Fact on the Fiction: Starbucks (the coffee shop of every corner) is named after the first mate of the Pequod. Starbucks
