The Lead In: Today, I was discussing this book with Joey at work. Yes, we both want to be whalers.

The 411 on the 55: All the science and poetry is dropped by Melville, you can feel the book speeding up as he races towards the clash of whale and man. I like that. You should feel a book’s pace as it goes along, ignore pace (as a writer) and you leave your readers to get bored or wander off.

Ahab is bat-shit crazy. Lightening strikes the boat and he laughs it off. But that’s only the beginning: a bird steals his hat, his compass gets reversed, he encounters a ship recently attacked by Moby-Dick, and has to fight through a typhoon. The world is fighting against his goal, but he is unmoved in his resolve. Finally, the whale is sighted.

Line of the Day: “In his fiery eyes of scorn and triumph, you then saw Ahab in all his fatal pride.” pg 594

The Fact on the Fiction: Prior to the sighting of Moby-Dick, there is some debate on the crew on wether to mutiny or not. They all know they will die because of Ahab’s insanity, yet they hold off. Consider the example of another famous boat and a mutiny attempt (successful). The Bounty
